Deciding to have a hair transplant is a big life choice. At Crown Clinic we aim to make the whole process as stress-free as possible.
Dr Shahmalak is a former NHS surgeon who has been running a private hair transplantation practice for the past 13 years. His only concern is the welfare of the patient and he will only operate on
clients who will get a real long-term benefit from the procedure. Here are his recommendations of the four things you should check before choosing a clinic and embarking on a procedure.
1 Is the hair transplant surgeon world class?
Hair transplantation is a life changing move and it is not cheap. The success of your procedure will be determined by the skill of the surgeon, so you want to pick one who is world class.
There are not that many clinics in the UK which are run by the surgeon who will actually carry out your procedure. Crown Clinic is one of those world class facilities.
The skill of tthe surgeon is the way that they naturally blend the transplanted hair around the patient's remaining natural hair so that the bald spots are filled in to look completely natural.
2 Is the clinic the very best and can you visit it beforehand?
All the clinics in the UK are regulated by the Care Quality Commission. They are inspected every year and if they don't meet the very highest standards, they are shut down.
We pride ourselves on our world class facilities at Crown Clinic. You can see pictures of the clinic on our website and Dr Shahmalak does most of his consultations at the clinic, though he also has consulting rooms in Harley Street.
If you choose to have surgery abroad it is very unlikely you will see these facilities before the procedure. Your operation could be put in the hands of junior technicians rather than a skilled surgeon such as Dr Shahmalak.
The transplantation industry in a country such as Turkey is unregulated which means you are taking pot luck with the clinic you choose and you will have very little recourse if things go wrong.
3 What procedure is right for me?
There are two popular forms of hair transplantation - FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). Around 80% of the clients at Crown Cliinic choose FUE. This is where the donor hair is removed individually from the back and sides of the scalp
and replanted in the balding areas. The advantage of FUE is the scarring is minimal and it is partcularly well suited to men who like to wear their hair short or shaved on the sides. Most of the celebrity patients at Crown Cliinic opt for FUE including Coronation Street star
Jack P Shepherd, Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts, model Calum Best and the former Liverpool and Man City footballer Didi Hamann. Around 20% of our patients still opt for the more traditional method of hair transplantation, FUT. This is where
the donor hair is obtained by surgically removing a strip of skin from the back or side of the scalp. The donor grafts are then extracted from this strip under a microscope and then replanted in the balding areas by the surgeon. FUT is less labour intensive than FUE and
therefore slightly more affordable. The TV doctor Christian Jessen has had two FUT procedures at Crown Clinic.
4 Does the clinic have strong testimonials from previous clients?
The testimonial page is one of the first you should read when you are checking out a new clinic. You want to see that the surgeon has lots of previous clients who are happy with their procedures. Look, too, at other patient examples on the clinic's website. At Crown
Clinic, we are well known for treating lots of celebrity clients. Check out how their hair has changed and see if you think they have got value for money.
